Memphis

Memphis was the ancient capital of Lower Egypt and is located about 20 km south of Giza. I stopped there on the way to Dashur. Very little remains of this former metropolis and a small museum holds a few of the statues and other pieces from that period |

A colossal statue of Rameses II is the most prominent of the displays here. It once stood in the temple of Ptah in ancient Memphis |

A fine example of a sphinx is here as well, showing some damage, but also excellent detail, where undamaged. You may notice the eyes and beard (weave) |

The sculpture park and definitely the colossal statue of Rameses II made this a worthwhile stop for me. Taxi drivers will take you to the local souvenir shop, but you surely know the drill. No offense meant. Everyone is trying to make a few bucks. |

I noticed this beautifully arranged veggie shop nearby and had the taxi driver, that Hotel Luna had arranged for me, stop to grab a quick shot. One tries to be minimally intrusive, but it never works, and they make a big deal of it. Nice country folk. |
